The Most Important AI Conversation
Has Nothing to Do With AI

I honestly can’t remember another technology that has created this much excitement—and this much opportunity at the same time. Every executive conversation seems to land in one of two places: excitement about what’s possible or concern about how quickly everything is changing. Both are understandable.

But I think we’re looking at the opportunity through the wrong lens.

The biggest opportunity isn’t simply adopting AI. It’s using AI as the catalyst to rethink how work gets done, how decisions get made, and how organizations create value. That’s a much bigger opportunity than deploying another technology.

From Curiosity to Business Value

For the last few years, the conversation has been about possibility. What can AI write? What can it automate? Which model is best? Those were the right questions… at first.

Now the conversation is changing, just like it has with every major technology shift over the last twenty years. Leadership isn’t asking for more demos. They’re asking, “How does this help us grow, reduce risk, improve service, or create a competitive advantage?” That’s a healthy shift. AI is becoming a business investment, and it deserves to be managed like one.

We’ve Seen This Movie Before

Cloud. Mobile Apps. Analytics. “Digital transformation”. Each began as a technology conversation and each eventually became a business conversation. Nobody celebrated moving workloads to the cloud. They celebrated becoming more agile. Nobody invested in analytics because dashboards looked impressive. They invested because better decisions create better businesses.

AI is simply the next chapter and arguably, the biggest opportunity yet.

Where the Real Value Begins

The organizations realizing the greatest value aren’t chasing every new capability. They’re building a foundation they can scale.

They start by understanding where they are today. They define how AI should fit into the business and not the other way around. They establish ownership, governance, and operating principles early. They manage AI as an enterprise asset, monitor adoption and policy compliance, and continuously measure value against business outcomes.

Notice what’s missing from that approach. Models. Prompts. Agents. Vendors. Those matter. They’re just not the starting point.

Governance Should Accelerate Innovation

Governance often gets framed as the thing that slows AI down. I think the opposite is true.

Clear ownership, lifecycle management, accountability, and measurable outcomes give leaders the confidence to scale AI responsibly. Good governance isn’t about saying ‘no’. It’s about creating the conditions to say ‘yes’ faster and with greater confidence.

The Real Opportunity

AI will continue to evolve. Models will improve. Agents will become more capable and will do more amazing things.

Organizations that separate themselves won’t necessarily be the first to adopt every new capability. They’ll be the ones that intentionally build the people, processes, governance, and measurement needed to turn those capabilities that truly translate into business value.

Looking back, every major technology wave eventually became a business conversation. AI will be no different.

If you ask me, this isn’t just another technology cycle. It’s one of the greatest opportunities we’ve had to redesign how organizations create value.
